I know, I know. Bad blogger. Let's move on now, shall we?
Life's been crazy and hectic since the surgery. I moved into a new place wit my new boyfriend, and promptly went so far into debt trying to pay off all the bills that I can't see where I'll ever get out without moving again. Of course, moving will cost a lot of money that I don't currently have, so I sold off a lot of my personal possessions at a yard sale last month. I still don't have enough money to move yet, but I'm really hoping that I can make that up this weekend when I have my massive Tupperware liquidation party and my stone-painting art party.
Other than that, my recovery is still going on. My back and abdomen are killing me on a pretty regular basis, but not nearly as bad as it was just after the operation. I've gained a whole lot of unwanted weight, skyrocketing back up to 220lbs! Needless to say, I'm a very fat case of not happy about that, not only because of the extra strain, and therefore, pain, but also because I now no longer ave any clothes that fit me properly. I've started NHRT, so I'm hoping that will help with the uncontrolled weight fluctuation.
I've started an exercise regimen, and if I can somehow remember to do it every day (damnable ADHD), I should be back in the shape I was before the surgery in a couple of months. Wish me luck!

Wii Win & FreeBee Theme!
The Springfield Freecycle(tm) group has been having semi-regular FreeBee events where you bring in your gently-used, unwanted goodies that fit the stated theme and trade them out for things that other people have brought. Jenny McCarthy is your in-game workout buddy--she will motivate, inspire, and guide you as you work to reach your goals, while keeping things fun (and funny) along the way. Since the game detects your movements, Jenny can coach you as you work out to ensure you’re doing the exercises correctly. Fitness has never been this personalized or this much fun! Personalized to You:
This is the time of year when we all start thinking to eating right and exercising, and it is also time for a new FreeBee. I was just looking for something to do, a good theme for the FreeBee, when I was chosen to host a party for folks to try out a new "sinless" treat and an exercise game for the Wii. I knew immediately what the next FreeBee's theme was going to be!
This month's theme is health & fitness!
Come on out to the FreeBee, Saturday, January 9th, between 2pm and 4pm at the Brentwood Branch library in Springfield, MO, and join us while we play with the newest, coolest Wii game around, try the newest guilt-free mousse from Jello, and swap our gently-used, unwanted exercise and kitchen gear.
Anything that fits into those categories goes, too, so long as it is legal, and appropriate for all ages (no diet pills please, etc). That means all of those old gym clothes you never wear anymore, the hand-bike you got for your shoulder therapy, and those barbells that've been collecting dust in your garage can now all find a new home! Kitchen towels, that dish set you got for your anneversary, and the toaster you don't use since you went low-carb are also great ideas to bring. Rememb er, if it goes in the kitchen, or is related someway to fitness or exercise, you can bring it. Please keep in mind that large itels like stationary bikes and treadmills will need to stay outside, and if not re-homed during the event, the bringer will need to transport it to the chairity where we give the leftovers.
The library for this event has a rather small parking lot, so they have requested that people carpool as much as possible, or park in the nearby blood bank's parking lot if they can.
I've been really busy lately, and haven't had the time to write all about the Wii game, so I ran off with their advert and posted it here for you to learn more about the game. While I did get a copy of the game for free, I have been so busy that I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, so my review will have to come after Saturday, when I can tell you not only what I think of it, but also what my party guests thought of it! :D
See you there!
Amazon.com Product Description of 'Your Shape' Fitness Game.
First, you take a fitness test so the game knows your current fitness level. Then, you tell the game what you’re trying to achieve (slimming your stomach, strengthening your arms, etc.). Based on that, the game designs a program specifically for you based on your fitness level, goals and schedule.
The camera projects your image onto your TV next to your in-game workout buddy, Jenny McCarthy. Jenny is in the game, motivating you and coaching you to success. The camera tracks your movements so Jenny can tell you what you’re doing right and correct any mistakes. That way you know you’re not wasting time.
The camera sees you, so it works without requiring any additional hardware, leaving your hands free to focus on the exercises.
Jenny McCarthy is your workout buddy--always by your side, entertaining and inspiring you. As you exercise, the game regularly displays how many calories you’re burning and your accuracy percentage so you can always strive to beat your high score!
More than 400 exercises ensure that your routine is working to meet your goals. Plus, you’ll never do the same workout twice
The game works without requiring any extra equipment, but if you have free weights, a balance ball, a step bench and/or a heart rate monitor, Jenny will include them in your personalized routine
Test your fitness level with the physical challenge, a test designed as a check-in for you to see how much your fitness level has improved. Take it any time!

Weight Loss First steps
I had a friend express to me her dismay at her scale not moving, and her seeming inability to keep track of her foods eaten and calories taken in. She was having trouble finding time to exercise, take proper care of hwe household, two children, and still have time for her husband, and especially herself. She was really frustrated, and I know that's where a lot of us who view ourselves as overweight have felt at some point or another during our journey to where we feel comfortable with ourselves.
No worries, tracking your foods eaten isn't for everyone. I know it was only an interesting experiment for me when I first tried it, but I didn't stick with it either.
Start simply. Drink a glass of the Acai Mixed Berry V8 fusion first thing in the morning before breakfast, and another before lunch. It doesn't have be right before you eat, it can be anytime, as a snack, or whatever makes you happy, but before the meal, not after. The vitamins and minerals in the whole fruits & vegetables help to maintain your body, the sugars keep your blood glucose up, and the sweetness of the juice helps to curb that craving for sweets. In fact, you can drink as much of the juice you want, as long as you still eat a decent amount of other healthy foods, and the 8oz glass first thing in the morning and before lunch.
Other than that, don't change a thing with your life. Don't restrict what or how much you eat, exercise more, or anything. Just relax, and know that the weight your body doesn't want is going to fall off.
You may never hear that a glass of milk or whole fruit & veggie juice suffices just fine on those hectic mornings, but it does. Even a cup of that V8 I love so much, mixed with a cup of yogurt or milk and some ice in the blender before you rush out the door is an acceptable breakfast. Heck, sometimes I just drink a glass of V8 because I'm so busy. *blush* I don't seem any worse for it, and at least I've put something healthy into my body at the first of my day, right? I just try not to make a habit of it.
We're all in this together!

Camping In The Summer Sun Without Summer Fat
Well, my family just got back from camping at our usual campground this year, and I have learned what being fat does to your mind.
In our little campground, there are porta-potties on either end of a strip of campsites (spots for about 10 tents, with grills and parking). The last year I went, I was about 300#, and I brought my own porta-john and set it up by my tent because the campground's bathrooms were simply too far away to walk to...
I honestly thought that a maximum of 5 tents down was too far! But then, I didn't count how many tents back then, or verify exactly ow far it was, I had just tried to walk it a coupple of times and it had tired me out and hurt so bad, that I drove(!) to the bathroom for the rest of the trip.
This year, however, I was walking other people to the bathroom because I had nothing better to do and walking with folks to the river access points (much further than the bathrooms)!
I feel great about how I feel now, and the fact that I didn't get tired or have any pain while camping really made for a much happier time.
But looking back on how I thought back then, what that extra weight did to my mind... I am ashamed of what I once was.
But so proud of who I am finally on my way to becoming! *grin*

Dropping Round Numbers
Have you ever noticed that dropping 10lbs feels better than dropping 5?
How about 12lbs, as opposed to 10?
The round numbers feel like real milestones, don't they?
And the other numbers, somewhat less important...
No matter the goal weight, there is always a "magic" number to drop below, that you, as an individual, really feel you've done something worthwhile, once you've managed it.
Just something I've noticed.
See, I wasn't sure that I would ever manage to be reliably below 200# ever again, especially considering the fact that the last time I was under that weight was about 11 years ago.
But the oter day, I weighed myself and I'd done it! Not just barely under 200#, not that phantom weight that means you could rise back up easily because of natural weight fluctuation, but a real drop, incapable of rising above 200# by mere simple daily or weekly fluctuation of a couple of pounds.
I am now 194#!
And it felt a LOT different than merely dropping a round number, like I've finally accomplished a major milestone towards my personal goal weight.
My shrinking has been a lot slower than when I first started this journey, but it is still consistent, and I am continually moving forward towards my goals.
I hope you are doing as well!

Review: SparkPeople
I lost my first 100+lbs before I started using SparkPeople, without changing my diet or exercising any more than before I started dropping pounds. It took me a little under a year to drop that weight.
I joined Sparkpeople a while back, mostly to see what all the hubub was about and to encourage other people with my story, since several of the people I am consulting for are also members. (I have become a health consultant after dropping all those pounds, even with the weight I still have to shed).
I have found SparkPeople to be an interesting and effective social tool for people who have trouble loosing weight on their own, in much the same way that FlyLady is an effective cleaning tool for clutterbugs who sit at their computers all day.
Regardless of how effective or useful it is for me personally, I do suggest it as a healthy part of any weight-reduction plan because of the support system it inherently provides. There are a lot of resources, both socially, and informationally, that can help out a lot, especially if one is just starting out on their journey of weight reduction, or as failed many times in the past. I've even learned some neat information and found some tasty recipes, which are always a good thing. *smile*
If you are looking to loose weight or just build up to a healthier you, go check it out. I bet you'll like it too. *smile*
Best of luck on reaching your personal weight goals!

Weelky Weight Report
Okay, so my mother's heart surgery threw me off by a lot. Working on her house to get it ready for her return took up nearly all of my time, and being over there meant that I didn't have my scale either.
Of course, I did manage to hop onto my scale at one point, but I wasn't near a computer at the time, so that didn't work too well for telling you about my progress either. Not that my "progress" was anything to brag about anyway, with a gain of 2.2 lbs. *chuckle* But such is life. We all have our ups and downs, right?

Sickness & Recovery
Did you ever notice that being ill is great for weight loss? *laugh*
A lot of people have seen it, too sick to really eat, you drink broth and tea, ending up with a fantastically healthy calorie, fat, and proetin count, goodly vitamin amounts, and a great daily liquids intake.
All that coughing is serious heart-healthy exercise, and really works out your chest and abdominal muscles, so by the time you are finally feeling better, you've toned up core muscles and lost weight to boot!
But you still feel miserable...
And you want to eat a lot of carb-rich, fatty foods once you are better because your body feels deprived of the fat that it burned during your illness... Yeah, we all know it's not worth it.
So now you know why I've been missing for a while, right?
Yeppers! I've been on the most amazing weight-reduction plan ever! I mean, I've been really, really sick.
Way to look on the bright side, right? *laugh*
So I haven't been able to go visit my mother in the nursing home because I can't risk making her ill (they sent her out of the hospital last week, she was ding so well). She is tentatively scheduled to return home (with 24 hour live-in help) sometime this coming week, so she's doing great, and I'm finally starting to come out of my illness.
The house is getting much nicer, and we are slowly but surely clearing out everything we don't want, and everything is looking and feeling much nicer.
Anywho, just wanted to drop you an update.
So how have you been?

New Beginnings: Weelky Weight Report
Here I am as promised, with the first of many new weekly weight reports. Feel free to join right in and play along with me in the pound-shedding game. Just post your weights in the comments, and we can cheer each other on towards our mutual successes!
There's tenths of a pound now, as my new scale reads in tenths as well as full pounds.
Starting weight (August 2007): 319lbs
Last Week's Weight: 2o4lbs
Current Weight: 205.4 lbs
Shed Weight: -1 lbs
Total drop to date: 113.6 lbs
Weight Goal: 135lbs
Pounds to Loose: 70.4
Since my last weigh-in didn't include any tenths, I can't be sure if I lost a few tenths, gained a whole pound, or somewhere in-between, but there is the weight of the day for your viewing pleasure. *chuckle*
Vision-con is always a bit odd on the weight loss front, as all of the extra exercise usually gets my muscle mass up a bit before I return to my regularly scheduled lifestyle and activity levels, and the quick food and constant snacking with no real meals really throws my entire life-plan for a loop.
Back on track for next week's weigh-in, I'll get some good rest to recover from the convention, and get back to my family's usual life.

The Scales of Accuracy

I finally broke down and bought a new scale last week. Not that I had the money, really, but it needed to be done.
I had a choice of one that was sure to work that looked really frumpy, or one that was exceedingly classy and goes with my intended home decor for a couple of dollars more. Usually I'd just hide the frumpy one, but this is one of those reward things, and I wanted it out as a reminder of my progress so far, and how proud I am that I've come so far on my weight shedding journey.
You can't tell by the photo, but it is tempered glass and the stand has a brushed brass finish. It's a LOT prettier in person.
I smile every time I see or think about my scale now, and that's a very positive thing. *smile*
Before I tossed out my old, terribly inaccurate scale (remember when my lying scale said I was 135lbs?), I weighed myself on both it and my new scale.
I had no clue how inaccurate that old dial scale was... My new scale weighed me at 204lbs, while my old scale weighed me at close to 130. That's a misreading of over 70lbs!
So what once read
Starting weight (August 2007): 245lbs
Last Week's Weight: 153lbs
Current Weight: 145lbs
Shed Weight: 8lbs
Total drop to date: 100lbs
Weight Goal: 135
Pounds to Loose: 10
should have read
Starting weight (August 2007): 319lbs
Last Week's Weight: 227lbs
Current Weight: 219lbs
Shed Weight: 8lbs
Total drop to date: 100lbs
Weight Goal: 135
Pounds to Loose: 84
That's a lot of difference, isn't it?
I still have a long way to go, but with less obstacles in my way, and more time and money to do what I need to do for myself and the girls, I'm back on track, and returning to my stated weight shedding goals.
A bunch of other folks in the community are in on it with me this time, in one of our local Yahoo groups, and I hope that my experiences with acai berry juice and other healthful practices that feel nothing like a diet and exercise regimen, will in turn help them to drop their stubborn weight as well!
It is my second-fondest hope, however, that their rapid and continuing success will lead them to refer folks to me as a health and weight-loss consultant, and maybe even to come to me themselves in order to get my full, individually-customized plan to shed their own weight most efficiently.
Just for effect, here is the "before" picture, taken back in August of 2007, before this journey began.
It's blurry, but it gets the idea across of how far I've come quite nicely.
Well, I'll be starting up the weekly weight reports again now that I have a new scale, so I'll see you for the next report, next week sometime.

Visual Differentiation
Fixed my laptop the other day by replacing the broken LCD screen, and a friend of mine did a photo shoot during the repair process. I just got the email with the photos yesterday, and not only is my neck wobble diminished, my HANDS are thinner!
We all know how hard it is to loose that stubborn pudgy-fingeredness (yes I know it's not a word, but I like it anyway, so there!), that one gets when exceedingly overweight, but I've done it. My hands are looking better now in addition to the rest of me!

I almost have almost normal-looking hands again! Hooray!

Recalibration
A good friend of mine, Maurkus, left a fabulous comment on my last message to you that is going to save me about $25!
If your scale is reading wrong, you can do it too, save yourself the price of a new one, and be able to save that money for other important things.
So here's how it works.
Most scales have a dial on them that you can use to reset the scale to zero. If your zero, like mine, is not really zero, you can take an item of known weight, like a gallon of water, and put it on your scale, then set your scale, using the adjustment dial, to read the weight that it should.
If you have a digital scale, and not a dial one, check online at the manufacturer's website for the user manual. Most places have their manuals downloadable in PDF format, and if you are capable of recalibrating your scale, the information will be there in the manual. Dial scales are easier, as you just locate the little dial or knob on the scale's body, and twist it one way or the other until you find where it needs to be.
Why not use a gallon of milk? After all, a gallon is a gallon, right? Actually, not exactly. A gallon is a volume measurement, not a weight, so a gallon of molten lead would weigh a LOT more than a gallon of oxygen, for example, but they are both still one gallon measures. That said, a gallon of water weighs precisely 8.33 pounds, and a gallon of milk weighs between 8.62-8.68 pounds depending on it's fat percentage. It's a density thing*.
I'm not a big stickler for the tenths of a pound thing, but if you are, or you're on Weight Watchers (I've heard they're sticklers on that), use a gallon of water for your calibration, because we know exactly what that weighs. We'll end up using a gallon of water as well, but only because we buy the organic milk in the recyclable glass bottles from our local dairy. (amazingly, the local, healthier, and much more flavorful and rich milk is less expensive than the big factory-farmed milk that causes me intestinal distress from all of the chemicals and additives they put into their cows). It's a no-brainer for our family!
Thanks to Maurkus, and his great suggestion, I will be able to go fix my scale sometime here in the next couple of days, and finally get an accurate weight! Hooray!
*Average milk weighs 8.6 pounds a gallon but as cream has a wide range of variations in the per cent of butter-fat it contains, milk varies in weight in proportion to the change in the per cent of fat. Butter-fat or Milk-fat is the lightest constituent in milk, having a specific gravity of .93 while the average specific gravity of milk is 1.032. ~ Source~ "Standardization of milk and cream" from the library of the University of Illinois

Weekly Weight Report (Riiight!)
You remember when I was all amazed and excited about shedding weight a time back, right?
Weekly reports on how much I was loosing, commentary on the losses, gains, stalled moments and all, it was a fun ride, and we shared it together for a while.
Until I discovered that my scale was terribly inaccurate.
Not that the weight lost wasn't accurate, just the numbers the scale was spitting out. The amount lost was still the same, as it was inaccurate to the same degree each time.
I have yet to be able to afford a new scale, as there is so much else that is so much more important to pay for at the moment, and I kind of feel bad for not keeping up with the weekly thing anyway, but I'd also feel bad for giving you false numbers.
I think you see where I'm going here, don't you?
So, last time I weighed myself, about a month ago, the scale at our house said I weighed only 145lbs, and had 10lbs to go to my goal weight. With much joy and exuberance, I told you;
Me:
Starting weight (August 2007): 245lbs
Last Week's Weight: 153lbs
Current Weight: 145lbs
Shed Weight: 8lbs
Total drop to date: 100lbs
Weight Goal: 135
Pounds to Loose: 10
I weighed myself on that rickety old liar of a scale again a week or so ago, and it said I had reached my goal! So the incorrect scale says I've lost that final ten pounds, and all the weight I planned to, but there's a problem.
The scale is wrong, terribly, horribly wrong!
Sure, I look like I did back in 200o, and that's great! I've effectively shed 8 years worth of consistent weight gain in a single year!
Woohoo!
But anyway, the scale reads low. If it wasn't for me knowing that I was nearly 200lbs back in 2000 that told me it was off, my friends weighing themselves on it would have convinced me for sure.
They said they adored my scale, and it was great for motivation, but not much else, and I agree.
So I have a little task ahead of me. I need to get a new (or at least new-to-me, and accurate) scale in the house, and find out how much I weigh now. I'll also have to find out what I topped off at, at my peak heaviness.
I have a searing dread that I was over 300 pounds at my peak, and I'm honestly a little afraid to find out what I weighed back then, or what I weigh now for that matter. Looks like its time for a trip to the doctor, or at least the scale aisle in my local shopping center. *sigh*
On the other hand, I was walking to the store the other day, and got wolf-whistled by three college boys in a pickup truck, so I know I'm looking lots better than I used to, even if the mirror didn't say so (and it does, loudly). *smile*
Have you ever been a little happy to be deluded, even after you found out about it?

Weekly Weight Report
I've decided to change the word "loss" to "drop" in honor of a great little shirt I saw a while back. It said "Loosing weight infers that I want to find it again." Since I have no intent whatsoever of "finding" all these excess pounds, I've changed the wording of the weekly report.
Me:
Starting weight (August 2007): 245lbs
Last Week's Weight: 153lbs
Current Weight: 145lbs
Weight Drop: 8lbs
Total drop to date: 100lbs
Weight Goal: 135
Pounds to Loose: 10
Woohooo! I've hit the 100# drop mark in less than a year, with no conventional dieting techniques whatsoever!
Keebler:
Starting weight (August 2007): 179lbs
Final Week's Weight: 137lbs
Weight Goal: 145, Surpassed by 8lbs on 3/6/08
Additional Loss: 10lbs, 3/31/08
Total Loss: 52lbs

Weekly Weight Report
Or not so weekly, as it were.
Well, we've been trying to juggle getting moved into the new place, keeping up with the girls' activities and schooling, volunteering, work, and attempting to do it all while still not neglecting our friends.
It's been quite the performance, but something managed to fall by the wayside.
See, in the moving, we misplaced the scale for a bit. So I haven't weighed myself since my last report, back in April.
But we've found the scale again now, so I can start back up with the reporting until I achieve my goals.
So without further delay, here's the skinny on the fat.
Me:
Starting weight (August 2007): 245lbs
April's Weight: 150lbs
Current Weight: 153lbs
Recent Loss: -3lbs
Total loss to date: 92lbs
Weight Goal: 135
Pounds to Loose: 18
Looks like I gained a bit during the move. Yep, I admit it, eating on the run and quick-fix meals made me gain three pounds back in the last couple of months. Back on the healthy wagon for me!
Keebler:

Oops, I seem to have missed my weigh-in last week. Sorry about that, not sure quite what happened to the time. *blush* Probably just keeping up with the governor's race, really. It's taking a lot more time, and bit more planning and financial creativity than I had previously thought it would.
Me:
Starting weight (August 2007): 245lbs

Weekly Weight Report
I may be at that plateau I expected at the beginning of my weight loss. Either that, or my recent convalescence has put a near halt to my progress. Either way, as soon as I am feeling better, I plan to step things up a bit and begin some resistance training. I need to firm up a bit from all the weight I've lost so far anyway. *smile*

Weelky Weight Report
No losses to report this week. I ran out of juices, and as stress is a lovely little thing that causes weight gain, the week without reliable transportation really did a number on my schedule, both for sleep and for work. Lack of sleep and higher-than-normal stress levels aren't so good for the weight loss plan. *chuckle* Tomorrow, however, is another day, and off to the store we go to stock back up on juices and get us back on track.
Whether one is loosing weight, trying to develop a new good habit, or attempting to break a bad habit, you shouldn't measure in failures, but in successes and chances. Every slip up or lack of progress is an opportunity to keep going, to work harder, and to prove to yourself that you can do it, mistakes and all. *smile*

Weekly Weight Report
This week made up for last week in spades. I've taken to slowly pacing when I'm talking on the phone instead of sitting still as a way to get a little exercise as well as make myself feel like I'm multitasking while still enabling me to concentrate entirely on the person I'm talking to. I'm not a big fan of just doing one thing at a time, but you knew that. *smile*
Anywho, The weight just keeps dropping off, and by the looks of things, within the next month, 'll be at my primary goal weight, and still not looking quite how I want to. I'm already contemplating what I might look like then, and what that could make me set as my secondary weight goal.

Weelky Weight Report
I can't seem to get enough food these past couple of days. It's either due to the extra stress lately, or the fact that I ran out of juice and haven't been able to get to the store to buy more, so I'm lacking in important vitamins that my body is trying to replace by making me overeat.
I'm really tired all the time right now, and I'm starting to feel a little depressed. Nothing I can't handle, but now is not the time for me to be feeling run-down, just when I have to pick up the pace.
Me:
Starting weight (August 2007): 245lbs
Last Week's Weight: 176lbs
Current Weight: 172lbs
Weekly Loss: 4lbs
Total loss to date: 73lbs
Weight Goal: 135
Pounds to Loose: 37
Not extremely excited about this week's weight loss either, but 4lbs is far better than what most doctors tell their patients to expect on a sensible diet, so I shouldn't complain. *smile*
Keebler:
Starting weight (August 2007): 179lbs
Last Week's Weight: 137lbs
First Weight Goal: 145, Surpassed by 8lbs on 3/6/08

As for that idea about measuring Keeb and I, the measuring tape I had planned to use has vaporized somewhere in the house. I could blame the kids, but we're doing spring cleaning right now, so in all honesty, it could have been misplaced by any of us.![]()
