TVP!
Soaked in hot broth of any type (mushroom, beef, vegetable, chicken, pork, or even lobster), it's less than 50 cents a pound reconstituted, takes flavor fabulously, and works great alone as a meat substitute, or in tandem with a meat to stretch the meat budget.
Cheap and tasty fun: Wonton wraps, cream cheese, a dab of olive oil, and lobster-broth soaked TVP. Makes for some seriously tasty crab rangoon wannabe for the side of that stir fry! *grin*
