    Barataria: The Festival Season Begins

And let me tell you, it started with a bang!

Not that I broke even, but I had a lot of fun, and there's good news on the horizion for Barataria being even better next year. Seeing as this was the first year of the festival, no vendor worth their salt was actually expecting to make a lot of money, but rather, we put on a good showing, so that the attendees would be excited about it and tell all their friends. Of course, that makes for a bigger event in future years, more people coming, and bigger profits for the vendors.

Working festivals for fun and profit: All it takes is a little patience! *grin*

But I digress... The costumes of the players (pirate and faerie courts) were simply breathtaking, the events and performers were professional and fun, and all ages attended and had an absolute blast. Barataria would have been hard pressed to do better as a first year faire than they did, and that's saying a lot! I've seen established events that weren't anywhere near the quality that Barataria was in it's first year.

The tale of how Barataria, the mythical aisle of the pirate king, Captain Black, came to be moved by the faeries into the current day is well told in numerous "journal entries" by the various characters of the faire, and is a great read, even if it was not associated with such a beautifully put-together event. You can find the tale on the Barataria website.

I already have a few of the unseelie court in love with my Vita-FizZ. It was really amusing that they gave my candy yet another nickname "crushed baby Seelie in a tube". I'll tell ya, they all played their parts well, stayed in character, and were creative to boot! *smile* In the heat of the day, I was fanning people on my break, and I fanned the fire faerie, another of the unseelie, and she thanked me by saying something along the lines of "oh that's lovely, I just might not kill you" *chuckle* Simply beautifully done, really, on all counts.

To see some of what I am talking about, photos, videos, and commentary on the first year, check out Barataria Pirate and Fairy Faire on Facebook.

    And Now We know

What is it we know, you may ask yourself? Well we now know exactly how long it is between when I feel good enough to blog and do a few other small things in my life, and when I tackles everything head-on again after a major surgery! *laugh*

As evidenced by my recent disappearance from the blog, I've been exceedingly active as of late. This coming weekend is Barataria Faire, Springfield's very own pirate and fairy festival. I have to finish my costume, I'm impatiently awaiting the delivery of some of my components, I'm trying to get out of sewing as much as I can manage, and since the great data loss a few months ago, I've also been completely reworking my product labels! *pant pant*

But that's not all! Oh no, of course not! I still have to make a new batch of every product I sell, adfter, that is, I say, AFTER! I find my danged recipe book! *pulls out hair*

And I have to get a whole lot more volunteers to paint on before the event so that I can make a paint example book that will be not only worthy of the event, but also worthy of my artistry. These next few days are going to be a TON of fun, let me tell ya!

Actually, they will be. I've been having a blast creating the little finishing touches for our costumes, and I'm planning a sew & show party for Wednesday. I finally found both my canera and the charger for it's battery, so the photos are coming as quickly as I can find models willing to be immortalized in my paint book. Three down, about 40 to go! LOL

And of course, everyone is welcome to attend Barataria Faire The tickets and attractions are inexpensive, and it's going to be a fabulously fun time! Bring yourself, bring the kids, and come frolic with the faeries and pirates in the first Barataria Faire ever, on the square, in Springfield, MO! *grin*

    Wish me luck!

    Artsfest 2008

It was a great event, and a ton of fun for all involved. Feel free to check out the other photos of those who chose to share a part of the fabulous weekend with us.

As usual, we had a few folks set forth a challenge with first-time designs. I love a good artistic challenge, and ArtsFest didn't disappoint. *smile*

ArtsFest always has a plethora of other people's pets to love on, mostly dogs, but the furry highlight to my weekend was this adorable little rex agouti ratty boy that I was allowed to snuggle on for a few minutes towards the end of the day on Saturday.

What a perfect joy he was, and a great way to end the festival!

    Newstime

On the 30th of December, and again on January 1st, I was on the news.

The 31st was a news piece on Springfield's Freecycle(tm) group. We had just a little over 24 hours from the first contact from the reporter to be ready for the interviews. A mandatory two people for the reporter to interview, both of which had to be involved in the group in some way, and I had to have Keebler dig out the presentation board and fliers that we use for community events. Lucky for us, we can pull together on short notice, and both myself and my best friend Moosie ended up looking great on the local TV news, on two channels, and on the station's web site. You can view it here. *smile*

On the 31st, Springfield had it's first night celebration, and I was one of three volunteer face painters in the Expo Center, the main venue for the evening's festivities. Faith's family took the kids out to enjoy the event, and Keeb and I manned the face painting booth. Everyone had a blast and went home exhausted.

I did make it into the paper, and both Littlebit and I made it into the online extra photo gallery of the event (twice). The shots of her are beautiful and fantastic, while the images taken of me were of the prep of my "hair-hat", which at best looks a bit discombobulated, and at worst looks completely idiotic. Betcha can't guess which looks they caught me in? *laugh* But it's all in good fun. *grin* Such is the life of a children's entertainer.

No Grass Grows On The Sidetrack

Working really hard all day to get things done in time for the First Night celebration in downtown Springfield. I would like to have a few new business supplies ready for the event, as well as a specialty celebration book, but things aren't looking good time-wise.

Amazingly, this time it is not my procrastinating that is getting in the way. Sheldon still isn't fixed, and we've heard nothing about if he will get that way any time soon, so we are relying on my mother to drive us around. Not fun, and very time consuming. Add to that the distraction occurring when I got a message yesterday that one of the local TV stations wants to interview me and another involved person about Freecycle(tm) for the news. I had to run around crazy looking for the FC stuff in mom's garage so we could do the news thing. Look for us on KOLR 10 and KSFX, sometime after 3pm on Sunday.

I also have been preparing a special little surprise for you for the past week, which I hope to be able to present very shortly. I do have a time-related goal set for this, but we all know what happens when I tell you 'I'll tell you tomorrow" or some such. right? Yeah, I have promised posts sitting from as far back as last February, just waiting for me to finish them for you.

    Big Fun & Funny Hats

After getting only 4 hours of sleep and not getting an email back from the terribly overworked parade coordinator within the exceedingly short (and did I mention busy?) week before the event, I decided to do what I always do. I packed up my supplies, dropped in at the event when it was first starting, had an impromptu chat with the folks helping to set up the square, and asked if I could donate my time by adding my talent to the festivities.

As it happens most times, I was allowed to set up and start painting. *grin* Life is good.

My mom dropped us off with three of our wheeled carts to get the supplies wherever we may go after it was over. In fear of the coming storm, she was heading over to her mother's and was not going to be able to pick us up from work and take us back to somewhere warm.

There was a clowning troupe, with an adorable clownkid, at the parade there for the first time ever, as well as a balloon twister, and it was just grand to have them to perform with.

Since I was donating my time, I took tips and implemented my new business model of taking photos of nearly all of my paintings to post over on the business face painting blog for all the parents to grab for their memories. See, I decided that since a lot of parents forget their cameras when they head to an event, I aught to add a little value to the face painting experience. Everyone loves having a little something to remember their fun by, and a photo of their paint is the best way I can make that happen.

That paint I tried a while back? I'm really glad I didn't switch, because it rained off and on all day long, and there would have been an awful lot of unhappy kids yesterday if I had. Well, I might not like how that other stuff works, or it's staying power, but I did get one benefit out of trying it. Through learning how to use the other stuff, I learned how to sponge paint and blend with my regular paints. I now have a whole new world of possibilities open to me, and the new designs really show the difference.

I was the best in the area before, and now I've become even better!

Of course, all of the photos I take are copyrighted, and the only people authorized to take them from the site are the parents of the kids. To go see what I've been up to, you can take a trip over there and have a look. *smile*

For a design I've never done before, I get a signed waiver/permission slip from the parents so that I can add the design to my book and website permanently.

The reason I was up so late the night before a big event, you may ask? Last minute prep, like always. *chuckle* No matter how much we get done, there is something more to do, and this year it was finishing up the new themed design book for all winter holiday festivals, and building my hat.

I've started making specialty hats to put my dreads up into for events these days. It adds to the festive atmosphere, makes people smile, and draws a lot of attention to the booth. It started this past Halloween when my fabulous paperboard *CoughTrafficConeCough* designer witchy hat got me on television during the report on the MSU homecoming tailgate party. (I have yet to show you that one, sorry.) It has now become an obsession, and the creative spirit drives me onward to more fun styles. This most recent holiday hat is a Yule tree surrounded with gifts, including not only wrapped packages of various shapes and sizes, but also a teddy bear and a shiny new bicycle with a blue bow. It doubles as home decor when I'm not performing with my brushes.

We stayed late to paint up the last stragglers after the parade ended, as we often do, then packed up everything on the carts to take home. After stopping in at a local coffee shop for a creamy cup of hot cocoa to take the edge off the cold, we rolled our carts to Keeb's mom's place, about 1/2 mile away, through the thick fog.

Yesterday was a lot of fun, but I sure was tired when we arrived at our destination.

    Yesterday...

    Oh what a day.

I spent another 4 hours on the phone with the telephone company, getting more irate by the second. I had paid my bill in full the other day, and should have reasonably been able to simply get the account reinstated, but no. Seems that since I had a combined billing account, that the stranger-than-fiction way I had my telephone and internet service 'on hold', while still enabling the mobile phone service to work caused some idiot in the billing department to take one look at my account with it's past-due balance during our previous fiasco (clerical error on my part, I admit it), and say 'Well golly gee, if the account is closed, let's close the account!', then they did so. *boggle* No notice of suspension in my email, no warning, just cut off without a word.

When I called today, I was shipped all over the country, from call center to call center and departments galore, where I managed to confuse the living daylights out of five customer service people. At one point, a female got so upset with me that she transferred me to the Spanish-language customer service. This was only annoying though, and not debilitating like she had hoped, and with my limited skills in Mexican (a different language than Spanish, I swear it), I soon reached a friendly voice who was bilingual and listened to me relay my tale yet again (after I got him to speak American ~Again, different from proper English by far~). He seemed genuinely saddened that he was going to have to transfer me yet again because he couldn't access my account, but he found me someone with whom I could speak reasonably and who could understand what was going on.

Even still, the new fellow had to contact the land-line phone people to see if they had received the payment that I had given him the transaction number (receipt) for, and it took him 30 minutes to see what he could do, then another 45 after we got off of the phone and I went to work, for him to be able to convince someone (anyone!) to allow the return of service to our family's cell phones. We didn't know that until later, however...

    Now on to work...

The other day, I said that Eeyore would get us to the upcoming day's events. I was almost wrong. See, as soon as we dropped my mother off at the car place to sign all of the paperwork to get herself that car she has fallen in love with (that she somehow did not return home with) the car started having serious problems.

Chugga, pause, chugga, pause, rev, stop, coast, repeat. *sigh*

About 1/4 mile from the party, he finally gave up the ghost and died in the middle of one of the busiest streets in town. We pushed him into the chicken lane and continued to push for about 2 blocks or so before I was too tired to push anymore. Though I think I got the point across that we were going to get to the event with him in tow however, because when I tried the car again, he started back up and successfully limped the rest of the way there.

Chugga, pause, rev, stop, coast, chugga, pause, repeat.

We were later than we had planned for the event (but still arrived before it started), but were forgiven when I told the coordinator that we pushed the car two blocks somewhere en route. *chuckle* Sometimes honesty is the best excuse, even if it is weirder than all heck.

The party went great, Ladybug had her first paid performance as a poi-spinner, and after a few false starts, we got the car back on the road to grab ourselves a Littlebit from the sitter before we headed home.

Something is burning in the car now, and we have to drive with all the windows open.

Chugga, pause, backfire, chugga, coast, roll...

We let it sit for a while (and let our systems clear out a bit) when we stopped for Littlebit, in the hopes that it would cool?, rest?, reset?... Whatever. In the hopes that it would run better if we did.

Upon stopping at the sitter's, I checked my phone. Still there was no signal, and I was starting to get upset, so I just turned it off and gave up. But after turned it off, I got the strangest urge to turn it back on again and see if the sim card would re-register...

It did! *grin* They got it turned back on, we found out later, less than 1 hour after I left for work. Of course, nobody had any way to tell us that, because our phones still weren't working. *rolls eyes* Keeb flipped his phone off and back on, then nearly died laughing. The phone company had sent him a text message on his phone with instructions on how to reactivate/re-register his sim card with his device so it would work again for calls...

Only he couldn't have received the text unless he had the phone working again...

I maintain that massive corporations are run, at the highest levels, by nincompoops who mostly sit around all day creating special policies to make everything as annoying and confusing as possible. Speaking of which, I still haven't heard from those folks who run the Cody's chain of convenience stores either. I think I can reasonably assume that they are blatantly calling me a liar and think very little of both their customers and their PR.

Letting the car sit worked, though.

After about 45 minutes, we all piled back inside and tried our little Eeyore again, and he cut off once on the journey, but he did get us back home.

We have an appointment for a mechanic on Tuesday.

First Impressions & Comparisons: Face Paints

Received a sample of a new kind of paint in the mail and looked at the ingredients first off. I only got red, white, and blue to test, so the possible designs are limited, but the ingredient listing was already telling me something I didn't want to hear. The paints are made with food coloring. A good thing for some people, my kids are allergic to blue #1, the main pigment in the blue (and likely included in all of the greens as well). I started testing the paints with express instructions to my girls not to get any of the blue paint in their mouths. Red#40 and Blue#1 are increasingly common allergens. There was no Red#40, a gift I am thankful for.

So far I've tried three designs to test the various techniques and styles that can be used with this paint to create new faces, and I've nearly succeeded with two. The images in this post are not indicative of my usual quality of work, rather they are what I ended up with in my two almost-successful attempts at creating something beautiful with these 'new' paints.

    * Lines: I've discovered that I can indeed get a good bright line. This sort of surprised me, as this is a cake makeup that works a lot like a watercolor. Dip your brush in a bit of water, pick up some paint and begin. Very straightforward and intuitive. If you need a lighter color in a line, mix it with white. This takes extra time out of my painting that I don't like to spend making my customers wait. I don't know if there is a way to make one's own colors in advance of a painting event.

So it passed the bold color and line tests for paintbrushes quite nicely. I didn't have to dip my brushes any more than I do with my current paint type. Another bonus over my current paint set: it's solid almost constantly, so there's no risk of spilling your paints and making a mess, and they weigh less for travel. Fabulous.

    * Blending: The blending, shading, and light color test went a little oddly. It takes a bit of getting used to, and I eventually had to wash off the first attempt because I could not figure out the proper ration of water to paint to get it to work right. As you can tell from the photo above, applying a thin, translucent layer of paint is very simple. However, this isn't what I was going for. I was trying to get a darker blue edge, fading into nearly non-existent near the eyes. Was it too much water, not enough pressure applied to the face or to the block of paint? I guess I'll find out later when I try them more. I am not the type to give up easily on something that so many in my field say is the best on the market.

    * Layering: Putting one color on top of another (base) color provided a challenge, as these paints never fully dry, but are reactivated whenever they come into contact with moisture. This led to quite a bit of inadvertent mixing when I was trying to get bold highlights. I also had to rinse my brush more often to prevent the base color from getting into and mixing with the color in the paint pot.

    * Wear: My kids and I simply love the way this stuff feels on the skin. It feels just like skin and doesn't crack or peel. It will run if you sweat, and it will smear if rubbed, even after it is dry. It will stain your clothes if it gets on them. It's a natural side-effect of using food colorings in your paints, but it feels natural.

    * Removal: Wash with soap and water. Well, that's what the instructions said anyway. More like wash with soap and water multiple times until all of the remaining dye staining your face is finally removed. My girls both had to wash at least twice to get the paint off. Once, we had to wash 5 times, then gently sponge at facial creases with a clean damp sponge for three minutes to get it all off.

    * Instructions: There aren't any instructions beyond 'use a damp implement'. I understand why, of course; different color saturations require different mixes of paint and water, and blending is another story entirely. It'd be really hard if not nigh on impossible, for the manufacturer to describe how to get what effect on the back of the small included info sheet, and even if they tried, it'd still take some trial and error on the part of the artist to really get anything of quality going.

    * On Allergens: No matter how natural or harmless an ingredient, the numbers of people with allergies, and the number of people on earth, give cause to believe that there must be someone allergic to it somewhere on earth. Nothing is truly safe for everyone.

    * Notes: I have to say that the reason I wanted to test these paints was that I had heard some people talking about what a horrible and potentially dangerous thing it is for people to use the type of paint I have been using for over 15 years with no problems at all. I can only assume that these other people are thinking my paints are some other brand, containing toxic ingredients, carcinogens, formaldehyde, ammonia, and metal flakes. Yes those are the things I was told about the type of paints I use, not my particular brand, though it was insinuated with the broad "every paint of this type" type of comments. I have a mild case of multiple chemical sensitivity which also includes an acute sense of smell, and I've been drinking my paint water as a comedy gag for years. I think I'd know if there was something toxic in them. Let us not even go into all of the very obvious and glaring warnings, and disposal instructions there would be on a paint that contained any carcinogens in this day and age. We're talking about warnings bigger and more noticeable than those on cigarette packs. Certainly no product with these horrid ingredients would never be labeled as certified safe & non-toxic as my paints are.

In fact, the only two 'problems' I have ever heard from a customer is that they tried the wrong removal method and ended up scrubbing their child's face pink to get it off, and someone coming up to mock-complain about how their skin didn't tan through the paint. *chuckle* 100% sunblock. How do you remove my paints? A little warm water. Wipe a wet face painting, and off it comes, easy as pie. My kids are allergic to what I am testing if they ingest it. How many other kids are too? It has been said that normally, a face painter never hears about problems caused by their paints... How many people have had problems with these other paints and nobody has said a word?

When People who use these new paints hear people trying to talk kids out of having their faces painted, they say they hear things like "No honey, that itches, remember?" and "Remember how red your face was last time?". When I hear parents doing the same thing, I hear "It'll just rub off in a few minutes anyway.", "Honey, it's too hot, it'll just sweat off." and similar. I've had numerous parents warn their kids to not touch their paintings, and seen the looks of pleasant surprise when I show them that their designs are already dry, and tell them that the art won't come off from a simple day of hard play. My customers aren't afraid their designs will smear if their kids go into the bounce house, and the owners of the bounce houses don't worry about paint all over their equipment.

My paints don't smear, rub off, or stain the clothes after they dry. They also don't sweat off, and they have a good long wear time. Then again, my paints, undiluted, can have a tendency to itch and peel if used on active or mobile ares of the face (ie: around the mouth). Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

The thing is, the 'new' paints are licensed as cosmetics, clinically proven safe for use on the skin, and my paints haven't been sent through that testing and approval process. As a business aside, cosmetic grade paints are nearly free from risk of litigation, whereas my paints have none of that surety because they haven't gone through that costly process.

My paints keep my prices exceedingly low, as they are inexpensive, but the 'new' paints cost over three times what mine do. I would have to pass that cost on to my customers.

Neither paint is greasy or slimy, but only this other paint should be used in full-coverage body painting. I know the limits of my supplies.

    * Conclusion: These paints are about equal to mine, but for different reasons. Beyond what I have already said above, there are a few things I need to add. I have to paint much faster with my paints because they dry so quickly while the other paints lend themselves better to blending and art that takes more time and nuance. I would have to completely re-learn how to paint larger designs with the new paints, since they cannot be layered. The 'new' paints feel better on the skin and can be used for advanced shading.

    * Questions: Finally, I have some questions for you my beloved reader;

Should I try other cosmetic-tested paints, just to see if there is anything as good or better than what I currently use, or should I stick with what I know?

Which would you want on your child's face, or on yours for a day at the carnival?

Why do you answer that way?

Cramming Four Days into 12 Hours

Well, that's what it felt like anyway...
Work was great this morning, and I managed to get through it, despite being up all the night before, due to the glories of the great and mighty goddess Caffeina. We loves the coffee.

The new techniques and styles are coming along nicely as well, despite the fact that when one paints on oneself, it looks about 1/2 as good as it would if you had done it on someone else. *wink*Clickey the piccy to make it bigger and check my newest creation: The Bear-terfly! *laugh*

After work, we came back to my mom's place for a nap, and she took the kids out to go shopping.

We weren't asleep for but 15 minutes or so before we got a call waking us up, telling us that they'd been in an accident. *sigh*

Car is totalled, kids have had checkups, mom has had an ambulance ride, several x-rays, and a cat scan. We just got back here after spending nearly all day at the hospital.

The good news; nobody is damaged beyond a case of whiplash, sprains, strains, and bruises. So lots of pain, but no lasting damage. Somebody was looking out for my family today. *smile*

The car, on the other hand, is different story. Notice though, that the little angel on the dash is just fine, despite the obvious violent impact. My mother would see that as a sign.

    Feelin' Groovy

Feeling tons better today, and the olde body is getting back to normal pretty quickly. SO glad that's over.

Spent all day working on the computer. CSS is a lot easier than I had previously thought.

Didn't hear anything from housing yet, and I've decided to leave the situation to the powers that be for the moment. I will be offering to barter/buy a small (1/6 acre or so) chunk of basement-able dirt from anyone in or around Springfield on all of the applicable groups and e-lists I am a member of shortly (and craigslist!), but that is a job for another day.

Finally went to that 'other' face painter's website, and discovered that even though I have barely anything up on the web at the moment, at least my site is better than hers. Nobody in their right mind would hire an entertainer with blurry, deformed pictures, a single page, and blinking text. *gag*

I feel much better about the previously-possible competition now. *grin*

Been gathering up new ideas for designs from the web and sketching like a madwoman in order to expand the book of face painting designs.

Stay tuned for an extra-special event surprise! There are big, exciting things on the way.

    Making Out Like a Bandit

Not monetarily, but boy I made out great today!

Started out the day with the MSU tailgate party from 10am-2pm where we did our thing as usual, and got a bonus of seeing an old friend again who invited us all to a school fund raiser in a couple of weeks for another job and a free dinner. Of course we accepted. *smile* Saw another friend as well, who invited us to yet another fun event today, but our schedule was already full.

See, we had to run over to the square as soon as the tailgate party was over so that I could offer my services as a face painter to the first annual Taste of Springfield festival. I was a bit late on the draw with the offer, especially considering that I showed up nearly three hours after the event started, but there is something about saying you just came from another job, just found out about the event the evening before, and want to volunteer to work your magic for free that really makes folks amiable to nearly any delay. *smile*

Needless to say, I ended up painting faces from 10am to 8pm today. Friends dropped in to say hello and brought us a supply of soda with coke rewards points and some great conversation. They ROCK!

A lot of folks took my business card, asked about birthday parties or other events, and complimented my work. The people I was working with repeatedly thanked me for coming in and helping out, saying in many kind ways that I was an invaluable asset to the day. The coordinators of the event are very excited about having me work at other upcoming events, and at the very least, I have made some great business contacts and possible future business. *smile*

After the event was over and we had loaded (almost) everything into the car, we went for a walk around the event grounds and grabbed up a whole slew of soda caps for more coke points to redeem when we got home. Yaaay! *grin* Just can't beat free stuff, exercise, and family togetherness all rolled into one at the end of a long day.

We sat on the square for a few minutes, chatting with new friends after our walk to relax. A brother gave me a hand-dug crystal that he dug himself, and I taught him how to do a special coin wrap. Later, we dropped off at Jaye's store to pick up something we had left, and went on back home.

The girls had a great time playing and painting all day long, and Littlebit got covered in water-soluble paint and sidewalk chalk. Ladybug is complaining that she is having too much fun recently, and is having trouble handling all the excitement. Not sure what to do about that, but Littlebit is positively thrilled. Should I cancel tomorrow's trip to the Discovery Center for the family free day?

I am sunburned, tired, sore, and happy.

Face Painting, Weddings, and Grass Seed

I made sure to sleep in a bit today because I knew how busy I was going to be.

Ladybug left around 11am to be a part of her biodad's two weddings today. No, I have no clue why they had to have a separate wedding for both family and to appease the church, but I'm not going to question the how or why of anything with him anymore. I just shake my head, and I'm glad he's happy, no matter how strange his journey to joy seemed to me. *chuckle* He called to thank me this evening, and in the morning, they will go to mass as a family before they newlyweds bring my eldest back home.

Then off to MSU for a face painting job. I love football season for no other reason than the fact that I get to do a lot of face painting. *grin* It's so fun! That's where I was from 2pm to about 7, then we wandered over to the old place to pick up another load of things and plant grass seed. After a good, deep watering, and getting eaten to death by mosquitoes, we finally made our way back here to a dinner of mac & cheese with sausages and a movie.

I'm now almost completely relying on dial-up for everything and it is driving me crazy! Rambleman, I feel your pain. It is simply amazing what the difference between an M and a K makes.

    Artsfest on Walnut Street

Ozarks Friends of the Environment (including but not limited to The Sierra Club, and high school planet-action groups) asked Freecycle(tm) to make a showing at their booth this year at Artsfest on Walnut Street. Well, I volunteered to do some face painting to help draw a crowd to their booth, and the rest is history. *grin*

Okay, okay, it wasn't that cut and dried. See, I've always said that I would never have a booth at Artsfest because of the outrageous prices that are charged for a booth that make it impossible for a "starving artist" to actually get their name out there into the marketplace. The high cost of a 10' square of asphalt in the blazing sun (or pouring rain like last year) not only prevents many local artists from participating, but also shrinks the festival itself and makes Springfield look like it has less artisans than it really does. I won't pay to even go to the event though I live less than 3 blocks away.

But getting in free? To advertise Freecycle(tm) and my own business? Heck yeah I will! So after my anxiety attack on Saturday morning, I went in and showed my stuff. Saturday consisted mainly of me taking the personal possessions of the teenage volunteer painters off of the display tables and tucking them out of sight, standing around, and giving basic instruction when it was needed.

Riding home that evening, I checked out the other areas of the event. There was a slightly larger variety of vendors, both artistic and food-wise, the event itself was much larger, taking up nearly two blocks, and there were many exciting and fun things for kids to do in the kiddie village area, including playing a symphony instrument! Color me seriously surprised.

Sunday on the other hand, was terribly fun. I showed up in the morning with my entire setup and helped set up their booth and the other signage for maximum viewability. They put my table and chairs in the front, and the kids in the back, while they took turns standing out in the sun giving away compact fluorescent light bulbs to passers-by that asked what they were doing and what the booth was about. I loved their call for attention; "would you like to help us save the world?" Simply beautiful, and it got a lot of attention as well. *smile*

Of course with all these decorated ropes growing out of my head, it wasn't long before someone at the booth had the idea that somehow getting a CF bulb in my hair would be not only eye-catching and a conversation-starter, but also really fun for fun's sake. So there I was, working in the sun all day (most popular design Du jour: Spiderman), with a light bulb in my head. I took to saying I was "just chock full of great ideas today", and several interesting conversations ensued about how much work it would take to get a small solar panel set up in my head to actually light the thing up! *chuckle*

It was a lot of fun, and I was invited back again next year, an offer which I gladly accepted.

Can you find the light in my head?

    Heat Exhaustion

Wow I had a great time volunteering at Artsfest today! I'm really glad that I found that sunscreen on the ground on the way there too, or I'd be writing in crispy agony right now. *chuckle* Even with my dark skin tone, plenty of drinking water, and SPF 50, I am still burned from a day in the sun.

Ran errands and visited friends, then came home to discover that channel 33 local news had another news story about Freecycle(tm). One of these days I'll know about it in advance, and know when it is going to be aired. One would think that the group owner would be the person to contact, but that doesn't seem to be tha case at all. I'm not looking for any glory, but geez, don't you interview the closest to the top of the food chain about an org or some such as common practice? It just strikes me as wierd. And I really wish I could have seen the report/newsbyte.

I need a shower and some good sleep. Photos and more news on my birthday tomorrow. *grin*

    Mixed Media

After quite a bit of panicking, many late nights, and a LOT of work and effort from everyone involved, we pulled it off. Earth Daty was a resounding success, with many contacts made for both Freecycle(tm) and ArtFoodFun.com. *grin* As with any long day at an event in a loud place, there were times of stress, worry, or just outright exhaustion, but it was all worked out in the end, and everyone had a wonderful time. I know what I would have done without the volunteers, anon donors, and other moderators that helped out with the tables; I would have failed miserably. I may have been able to do it without them, but it wouldn't have been nearly so nice as it was. *smile* Thank you!

The Freebee was fantastic, with a great turnout and steady stream of participants all day long, including the channel 33 news team, who dropped by to interview the owner of the shop it is being held in. We don't know when that will be aired, but rumor has it that it will be later this coming week. I'm going to check in with them shortly to see if they need any additional information and to see when the airing date is.

Sadly, were too busy to go to a much anticipated home school event today because of all the other things we were doing, and missed seeing our dear friends again before they left state because they were too busy packing to make it to the Discovery Center. Tomorrow doesn't look much more relaxed than today has been, either. Lets hope it is as much fun and less stressful, 'eh? That would be a step up even if I still don't manage to get any rest.

    One Of Hundreds

Sorry for not posting yesterday, I was exhausted beyond words. We stayed up until 5am Saturday morning, napped until 8:30am then got ready to go the rest of the way. By 10am we were on the square in Springfield, Mo, setting up the booth. This was our first time with the screen room, and that was an adventure in itself with the high winds (sandbags and stake line marker flags next time). We stayed at the square until about 4:30pm, when we headed home to unpack the business goodies and pack up the stuff to give away at theFreecycle(tm) Free-For-All, where we stayed for three hours chatting before we realized what time it was, grabbed some soft tacos for the girls and my mother and drove the girls to spend the night over at grandma's. From there, a friend took us out to eat at the newly-reopened Chinese restaurant that had burned down last year, we dropped him off at home, and went home ourselves to do some arts & crafts. After painting some terribly enticing paper buttons (they said 'free candy') and pinning them to both the front and backs of our coats, we were off again to try and sell "hangover candy" to the revelers at the downtown pub crawl. We didn't sell anything, but we gave away quite a few samples, so hopefully folks'll be looking for us next year. *grin* We got home and crashed hard at 15 after midnight, and woke up, still exhausted at 11am.

It didn't snow on St. Patrick's Day, it sleeted. softly. Lightweight tiny hail-bits cascaded down from the sky at semi-regular intervals while my fingers froze to their core because I forgot my painting gloves. *chuckle* Amazingly, the day (and profits) were better than last year, when it rained for half of the day, but was somewhat warmer. The events were grand, with the square filled nearly to the brim with vendors, contests, rides and fun. I didn't get to see the girls in the parade because I was swamped with customers who were anxious to get decorated.

The Springfield Brewing Company let all of their waitstaff and bartenders off of work for a time during the parade festivities for the express purpose of coming to me to get "the coolest shamrock ever" painted on their faces, and that was a huge ego boost if I do say so myself. *grin* The photo above is of one of the great many happy faces I helped to create on the 17th. (likeness used with parental permission, catch of Z in the pic, a complete accident. Hi Z! I can see you!!!)

We had an absolute blast, even if we did manage to not take a picture of the booth and setup, or the lovely rainbow & pot o' gold I'd made for the event. We're going to make that a regular thing for the parade from now on, it was a HUGE hit! We didn't sell much blarney this year, but we almost sold out of the lip conditioner, and our "Gaelic Green" Vita-FizZ sold rather well as both a candy and a hangover cure. *wink*

Having prices on everything and a tip jar proved to be a very wise move, as we ended up with quite a surprising amount (though anything beyond the marked prices would have surprised me) in tips alone from our happy customers. We learned that we need to have a rope line to corral the customers for face painting so they don't block the product displays, but that is a lesson learned, and we'll be sure to implement it as soon as possible.

I met back up with a lot of old and new friends and acquaintances, which has become one of the expected joys of this particular event. It was great to see how many people were willing to brave the cold for a bit of family fun!

We're still exhausted and sore all over, but it was a great day of work, and almost too much fun, so it was well worth it, and that's what it's really all about.

    My Halloween Costume & Stuff

Work was fun, but there wasn't much money made from it, as two sororities decided to have face painting in addition to me, and we had two walk-off-no-pays today on top of that. (it happens when there are other face painters there for some reason). You'd think the two groups would have communicated ahead of the homecoming game to make sure they weren't copying each other so that they could both make good money, but no, they both had face painting and a duck pond! The dual duplication was kinda creepy.

But it was fun, I got multiple compliments on my dreads (who finally turned 2yo last week and are now officially "mature" dreadlocks) and my costume looks fantastic. (I am a fairy godmother, ala Disney cartoon-style. Fat, dumpy, eccentric, and garish with tiny little impotent wings.) *snicker* It has gotta be one of the best large woman costumes out there, and I put it together myself. (wings homemade)

We had an absolute blast at the UU Halloween party, but stayed a bit too late and ended up missing all but the goodbyes of the drumming on the square. When we got home, we scheduled for a babysitter so we adults could attend yet another party, but couldn't find the paperwork for the event or contact the host, so we are all going to bed early. Heck, we need the rest, but I feel bad about letting him down, even though the plans were only tentative. *sigh*
